The Alkaline Phosphatase Activity of Korean Human Milk

Abstract
The alkaline phosphatase (AP) activity, total protein, casein, total lipid and cholesterol were measured in 53 samples of Korean human milk, 9 samples of cow¢¥s milk and 8 samples of goat¢¥s milk.
Bessey¢¥s method was employed for measuring alkaline phosphatase activity of human milk, cow¢¥s milk and goat¢¥s milk.
1. The average AP activity was 1.4¡¾0.43 unit in the colostrum. The activity most decreased in the 4-5 days and rose again in the 6-7 days after delivery.
2. In the mature milk the average AP activity were 1.0¡¾0.37 unit, in the 1-3 month grcup, 0.9¡¾ 0.34 unit in the 4-6 month group, 0.9¡¾0.25 unit in the 7-9 month group and 0.9¡¾0.37 unit in the 10-12 month group.
3. The correlation was found between the AP activity and the total protein level of the colostrum but not in the transient milk.
In the mature milk the correlation was found between the AP activity and the total protein level except the 4-6 month group.
4. No correlation was found between the AP activity and the casein level in all cases,
5. The correlation was found between the AP activity and the total lipid level in all cases.
6. The correlation was found between the AP activity and the cholesterol level in the colostrum and the 1-3 month group.
7. The average AP activity of the colostrum of the primiparas was somewhat-higher than that of the multiparas.
In the mature milk no difference was found between the primiparas and multiparas. 8. The AP activity of cow¢¥s milk was higher than that of human milk and goat¢¥s milk.
